COACHING SERVICES

HELPING YOU MAKE WISE DECISIONS

1

Family law (divorce/custody cases)

I feel sorry for the consumer of family law services. Personally, I have been through two divorces, a custody case, a termination case, and an adoption. Professionally, I have seen hundreds of clients lost in the wilderness of the family law system. How do you know if your lawyer is doing a good job? How do you know if s/he is charging you for unnecessary work? What do you do if your lawyer ignores your calls or emails? Although I am reluctant to take on the high-conflict cases I once handled, I enjoy consulting with people represented by other lawyers and helping the confused consumer understand how the system works and make wise decisions about the myriad of decisions one must make when involved in family law litigation.

2

Negotiation

Negotiations are an integral part of life. Yes, we negotiate car purchases, business deals, and litigation; but, we also negotiate with our family members about a host of issues, which may include whether to buy or sell a home, where to take the next vacation, and whether to spend or save that stimulus check. Some of these interactions are trivial, but many have long-term repercussion. I have spent innumerable hours studying negotiating theory, much of which you can find in my book, “Mastering Negotiation.” Applying that knowledge to help my clients make wise decisions is how I spend much of my time as a coach.

3

Increasing happiness

I discovered positive psychology around 2012 when I received coaching training by a group that emphasized using it as a platform for coaching. If you are not familiar with positive psychology, there is a lot of science now that helps us understand what makes us happy and what does not. As a Certified Happiness Coach, please let me share this information with you and coach you to a having a more optimal life experience.

4

Personal finances/Estate planning

Having an undergraduate degree in Economics and being a Certified Financial Planner since 1990, I am very comfortable with coaching people with financial issues, including their estate planning. As a consumer (or victim) of various financial planners through the years, I view the advice of most financial planners with a healthy measure of skepticism. I am fully qualified to coach individuals and couples on personal financial issues. Indeed, many couples have marital problems because of unresolved financial issues. This is an area where it also helps to be a mediator. And, no matter what, I will not ask you to invest in my funds, buy my insurance, or invest in my annuities. Your money is your own! Keep it that way, but don’t be reluctant to seek a little wisdom from someone who will not charge annual fees for doing little with your investment portfolio. While coaching is not providing legal services, assistance on how you develop your estate plan may be. For more information on estate planning, please visit tnoblelaw.com.

Prostate cancer

2012 seems to have been a watershed year for me. In addition to starting my coaching practice and facilitating approximately 30 local lawyers in negotiation study groups, I was diagnosed with a rare form of prostate cancer. That led me down a rabbit hole of doctors with conflicting opinions, labs with different results, confusing medical advice, and discussions with doctors all across the country. If you or your partner has prostate cancer, please call me. Mine is a cautionary tale but one that every prostate cancer patient should hear. Please let me help you with this critical juncture in life.

Making wise decisions, life planning, and self improvement

In addition to the foregoing, I coach people on just about every dilemma, problem, or challenge you can name. What should I be doing with my life? What is my real calling? Should I stay in this miserable job for the good money or open up that craft store (or coaching practice) and risk starving to death? Should I continue giving my adult children financial support? And so on and so forth. Life is a series of decisions, and the “best life” is a series of wise decisions. Confused? Give me a call! I will help you bring your life into sharper focus!

FAQ

What is Coaching?

Coaching is a unique process developed in 1982 by Thomas J. Leonard, a financial planner who was looking for a more holistic and effective methodology for helping his clients reach their goals and live more fulfilled lives.

Six years later, Leonard founded Coach University.

A coach is your partner in achieving your personal goals, your champion during turnaround, your trainer in communication and life skills, your sounding board when making choices, your motivator when strong actions are called for, your unconditional support when you take a hit, your mentor in personal development, your co-designer when developing an extraordinary project, your beacon during stormy times, your wakeup call if you don’t hear your own, and most importantly, your partner in living the life you know you’re ready for, personally and professionally.

-Thomas Leonard

Unlike therapy, coaches assume that their clients are not suffering from some form of neurosis or ongoing emotional problems. Indeed, coaching is not therapy, and it is not providing legal services.

You do not need to have a legal problem or a mental health issue to benefit from coaching.

Coaching clients are people who are okay; they don’t need to be “fixed”. They want to improve, and they find value and synergy in what coaches refer to as the “co-creative relationship”.

In coaching, the client sets the agenda, not the professional.

Coaching focuses primarily on the present and the future, rather than discovering and redressing past wrongs.

Much like an athletic coach, a life coach’s job is to brainstorm, assist in setting goals, assist in problem solving, inspire, support, and reinforce successful patterns of behavior.

In many ways, a personal coach is simply a trained brainstormer.

Coaching is a professional service providing clients with feedback, insights, and guidance from an outside vantage point. The profession of coaching is similar to the practice of a physician, attorney, or psychologist. The major difference is that coaching is an on-going collaborative partnership built on taking action.

In this powerful alliance, clients find themselves:

  • Doing more than they would on their own.

  • Taking themselves more seriously.

  • Creating momentum and consistency.

  • Taking more effective and focused actions.

  • Becoming more balanced and fulfilled.

People hire a coach when they are making a career transition, starting a new business, feeling dissatisfied, re-evaluating life choices, or simply looking for personal and professional breakthroughs.

Coaching is action oriented. It’s also about moving forward, not dwelling on the past. It doesn’t matter how clients got where they are or who is to “blame” for how they turned out. Coaching is about where an individual is right now and where they would like to be.

With a coach as their guide, clients are able to define their dreams, recognize what’s holding them back, and move forward with great momentum and clarity of vision. …

Coaching is an ongoing partnership between coach and client designed to improve and enhance the quality of life. Coaches are trained to listen, observe, and adapt their approach to individual client needs. They believe the answers to challenges are found within the client and support that client in discovering and implementing their own solutions. …

-From “Exploring Coaching” (LearnMore Publishing, 2004-2005)

Coaches serve as a sounding board for solutions to the challenges we face on a daily basis.

Coaches are mentors in some cases, cheerleaders in others. Part consultant, part sage, part colleague, the coaching relationship unleashes the synergy inherent in a co-creative relationship.

Can I test-drive this process before making a commitment?

If you are new to coaching, request a “sample session”. Sample sessions are free and take only 30-45 minutes. While it is preferable for a sample session to be face-to-face, it can also be done by phone or video conference.

What if I am ready to start working with you?

Because coaching is a transformative experience, to receive the maximum benefits from the program, I usually request that new clients commit to eight sessions with a session every week or two and a reasonable number of e-mails between sessions, but there are many reasons to vary from this protocol. Sessions may be by phone or zoom.

How much does it cost?

Prices vary depending on the individual client and his or her goals but your first session will be free. During that session, we will work out a plan that fits your budget.

Give it a try!

You have been a great coach and I have stretched my wings far under your tutelage. To say that I appreciate all you have done sounds cliche, trite. More than appreciate, I treasure the lessons I have learned, and I value the ways in which I have been encouraged to extend, reach, and develop. As you reminded me several times, in a very humble way by the way, you’re very good at what you do.
